About Ulysses

Ulysses for Mac, iPad, and iPhone is a text editor for writers and winner of the prestigious Apple Design Award. Its pleasant, focused writing experience, combined with effective document management, seamless sync, and flexible export, make Ulysses a premium choice for writers of all kinds.

Ulysses can be downloaded for free from the App Store and the Mac App Store. A subscription is required to unlock the app on all devices, and includes a free trial period. There are a yearly and a monthly plan, as well as a discount for students and an option for volume licensing.

Features & Concepts

Ulysses combines a clean, distraction-free interface with a set of powerful tools for all aspects of the writing process. Users can do both: focus on writing and organize their projects from first to final draft. The separation of writing and formatting is vital: Users write in plain text and use a few memorable tags to mark up the meaning of text passages. During export, Ulysses will translate these tags to fit with the chosen output format.

Ulysses users rely on various features to organize their writing: an elaborate folder structure, keywords, the option to collect “material”, writing goals, robust outline navigation, and much more. The built-in grammar and style check helps them avoid mistakes and meet the right tone. If they’re done writing, they can transform their texts into PDFs, Word documents or eBooks, or upload them directly to blogging platforms such as WordPress, Ghost and Medium. All texts are stored in Ulysses’ library and, via iCloud sync, always available on all connected devices so that writers can always continue where they left off.

About the Company

Ulysses originates from a fruitless search: In 2002, Marcus Fehn, staff designer in a web agency, wanted to write a novel but couldn’t find a suitable tool. He came up with a design of his own and convinced Max Seelemann, who was still in high school, to take over the programming part. The initial version of Ulysses, released in 2003, was the first text editor explicitly aimed at creative writers. In 2011, Max and Marcus finally decided to take the app’s development full-time and founded the company The Soulmen, which is now Ulysses GmbH & Co. KG. Since then, Ulysses’ popularity and reach have constantly grown. It is now used by all kinds of writers across the globe, and across all of Apple’s major devices. The company resides in the center of Leipzig, Germany; their team has grown from two to 16, spread between development, design, marketing, and customer support.
